Hello world!

by Mekin Maheshwari, President of Engineering, Flipkart

Two weeks, and I would have completed 3 years at Flipkart.

I would be lying if I said the journey has been exciting for me – Exciting is too mild a word for the journey that Flipkart has had, and this holds true for most folks in the Flipkart technology team, who have been on the journey for some time.

But in this sky-diving-like-fast-paced-journey, we have not done justice to sharing back enough.

We at Flipkart Technology have been strong believers in the power of community.  A lot of how we work internally is heavily influenced by communities, esp. the Open Source community.  We have presented in a few talks (especially at HasGeek conferences), and spoken a bit in interviews.  We have also talked about the technology and culture on Quora.  But, given all that goes on inside Flipkart Technology, I think we have done a terrible job of being transparent with the rest of the community.

This blog will fix that.

To give you a taste of what you can expect on this blog, we plan to share:
  • Our learnings when dealing with technologies and the impact they have on business and customers
  • Thoughts that individuals in Flipkart Technology team have about areas: Technology, Open Source, Community, Organization, Hiring, Hack-Days, etc ..
  • Our failures – and more importantly the learnings from them

We have had an internal tech blog for a while now and the posts there are top-notch (I’ll let you decide for yourself, as we plan to put out those posts on this blog slowly).

Looking forward to this becoming an avenue for sharing, learning, heated discussions, hot debates, ideas and collaboration.

  1. Nice now I hope this blogs bring social commenting platforms like “disqus” and social sharing buttons immediately. I am starving to introduce this blog to my social graph.

  2. The first blog being called Hello World !! Was really awesome. Truly flipkart way. The sense of humor is uncanny.

  3. The tech behind flipkart always fascinates me, I was following bit’s and pieces elsewhere but now a centralised blog makes it much easier, thanks for doing this, please add RSS or atleast a twitter account for this blog.

  4. Mekin,

I still have the same questions I had when I first wrote to you, and like everyone else, I am waiting for “my Kart” to get Intelligent& Behavioral. Hope we will get the real talking here.

    1. Hi Ekta,

Agree with the need for the Flipkart experience to get a lot more intelligent. You should see posts about our efforts in that direction here.

We would also want to share about a lot that is under the hood & not obvious to a customer.
Some of them would include …

      – Supply Chain: Warehousing, Fulfillment, Last mile delivery
      – Retail : Pricing, Inventory Planning and more
      – Data Platforms
      – Digital : Content mgmt, Delivery, Mobile experience,
      – Payments : Fraud detection, prevention, Easing payments ..

      1. Mekin,

I guess(and hope) most of us are here, because we want to see what’s under the hood.

I think Flipkart is a very good example of vibrant Technological challenges and challenges that go beyond the “long tail” and thin-margins in retail. It’s more about the opportunity and the yet it may *feel* very fragile to an outsider, mainly from the Time perspective. Of course every Business has its own learning curve and cash flows keep maturing all along this cycle.

(Unrelated & a Confession) I wrote about the (Analytical) challenges that Flipkart faces and can resolve them in a Technical way, pushed it across to Technical “channels” on two different occasions, never heard back from them. And kept working on understanding the ecosystem.
(And..) In some sense, this process of “research”, and looking for “substance” was essentially a part of my transcendence from a mere consumer to Technology enthusiast.

PPS: I have learnt a lot about Technology and the real Business challenges and opportunities that Flipkart faces(Extend it to ANY e-commerce platform for that matter), via your very granular posts at Quora(Can’t possibly Thank you enough for that ) – which is why I very much appreciate this initiative.

        (Please) Keep Posting !!
